Jean David Michel – Founder, Indie Comics Writer, Illustrator, Designer, Comic Shop Owner

In 2009, Jean and Michaela Vuolo Nieves started Megabrain Comics which operated as a publishing company for three years before closing its doors. In 2016, Jean resurrected Megabrain as a retail brand with plans to eventually reopen the publishing division.

5 years prior to opening the shop, Jean had the idea for this very site you’re on now (different name, but same great logo created by Kristin Sorra) and attempted to Kickstart it with quite a bit of industry support. Unfortunately the technology at the time was just a little behind the vision and too much would have needed to be built from scratch — You can read a bit about it on Comic Vine…

As he puts it, 

“In the interim 5 years, I’ve learned a lot more about the comic book industry and have become a part of the wider community. I could never imagine my life outside of it. These past 5 years have also given me perspective on what the true heart and nature of a space like this should be about — Offering a safe, intersectional, inclusive and cooperative place where the unique and vibrant community of creatives and business folk in the comic book industry can feel comfortable to share with one another and inspire each other. A tiny corner of the internet we can call home and return to as the rest of the internet burns in the whims of billionaires and trolls.

These past 5 years have also allowed technology to catch up with my idea, so we’ve been able to build the bones of this community in record time. In that time I also became aware of an incredible Indie Comics creator named Mari Naomi who, clearly feeling the deficit in our community, created three amazing sites…

Her databases directly inspired me as we designed the infrastructure for the member profiles and that’s what this is all about — Each of us connecting and building something together — A bigger, stronger, thoughtful comic book community, built on one unifying common trait that runs through us all… We love comics.”

So, now with the help of his talented and brilliant sister, designer and web developer Manon Michel, they hope to continue working with you and the rest of the industry to make this the space we’ve all needed.
